Stone cladding: comparing reconstituted and natural stone for your project

Choosing a stone finish for an external wall or boundary pier involves more than finding a photograph you like. Ask both suppliers for comparable information: the weight of the chosen finish, its thickness, the corner detail and the documents for your proposed wall. This guide compares natural stone with Ristone’s concrete stone-effect cladding, also described as reconstituted or manufactured stone.

Compare the actual products

Natural stone cladding is cut from rock. Reconstituted stone in the Ristone range is cast from pigmented concrete in moulds taken from natural stone. The colour runs through the mix. Neither description, on its own, tells an installer whether a particular wall can carry the finish.

Start with a model and thickness from each supplier. For natural stone, ask for the weight per square metre at the thickness being quoted. For Ristone, use the selected model’s sheet. The range is approximately 20-49 kg/m², calculated from listed box weight and coverage. This is a model range, not a universal weight for manufactured stone.

For external insulation, check the system documentation before choosing the finish. The manufactured stone specification guide explains which information to request; a lighter-looking texture does not establish suitability.

See the sample and the batch

Natural stone has the colour and pattern of its rock, with variation between blocks and individual pieces. Ristone offers defined shades by model, but small differences between production batches are possible and a photograph may differ from the real shade.

Compare physical samples in daylight. If the finish must read consistently across a wall, discuss the whole quantity together and order for that surface at the same time. The colour and maintenance guide covers batch coordination and care.

Resolve exposed corners before selecting a model

An entrance pier shows its corners on several faces. Include that junction in the choice rather than deciding from a flat sample alone. In the Ristone stone range:

  • Alborz, Cumbria and Himalaya have bicomponent corners, assembled from two pieces.
  • Aurora and Bavaria have monocomponent and bicomponent options, as listed in their sheets.

For other models, and for the natural stone alternative, ask how the corner will be formed. Confirm the actual components in the quotation.

Ask for documents for the proposed use

Request the product sheet, installation instructions covering substrate, adhesive and joints, and the available performance and conformity documents for the proposed project. Natural stone slabs for cladding are covered by EN 1469:2015; that reference is not evidence that a particular concrete product meets the same standard. The existing source identifies requirements including thickness, flatness and durability.

Ristone’s documents are confirmed for the selected model at quotation stage. Use the technical data page to prepare the enquiry. A product name or photograph does not establish performance.

Include maintenance in the comparison

Ristone stone-effect concrete includes water-repellent treatment in production and requires gentle cleaning. Natural stone care depends on the rock: ask its supplier for the appropriate method. Compare the care instructions for the actual samples rather than assuming all stone finishes need the same treatment.

Send the chosen models, substrate, wall area, corner heights and delivery destination when you request a quotation. Browse the stone-effect cladding range alongside those requirements.

Before you order.

Is reconstituted stone always lighter than natural stone?

No. Compare weight per m² at the quoted thickness. Ristone stone-effect cladding is approximately 20-49 kg/m² by model; ask the natural stone supplier for the corresponding figure.

Are all Ristone stone corners one piece?

No. Alborz, Cumbria and Himalaya have two-piece corners. Aurora and Bavaria have one-piece and two-piece options according to the sheet.

How should I compare colours?

Compare physical samples in daylight and discuss the complete quantity for a surface together. Natural stone varies and small differences between concrete production batches are possible.
