Brick slip corners: how to finish and order an external corner

An external corner is where two clad faces meet, so decide how it will be finished when choosing the brick slips. The corner specification determines which components you order and how their heights line up with the courses on both faces. For a UK or Irish self-build, extension or boundary wall, include that detail in the enquiry before the installer starts setting out.

This guide covers Ristone concrete brick slip corners. Start with the brick slip range for the finish, then check the exact model and corner code together. A corner piece is model-specific: choosing a colour alone does not identify the component.

What is a brick slip corner piece?

A dedicated external corner component continues the brick appearance around the junction between two faces. Ristone’s product data distinguishes two constructions, and the distinction belongs in the order:

  • Monocomponent: one L-shaped piece, with a return on each face.
  • Bicomponent: two pieces assembled at the corner.

Do not describe every corner product as a single moulded piece. Ribe’s C05B is bicomponent, while the four M-coded brick corners below are monocomponent. Ask for the installation instructions for the specified component so the installer knows which arrangement is being supplied.

Which models have corner pieces?

The following dimensions reproduce the corner entries in Ristone’s product data, in centimetres. The slash separates the two returns or components as recorded in the sheet; it is not a cutting instruction.

Berlin C84, Berna C82, Corby C58 and Oliva C66 have no corner piece listed. Oxford C69 also has no corner listed in the data, and its pieces per box and m² per box are not confirmed in the current sheet. Ask for box coverage to be confirmed in the quotation before ordering. Do not infer an Oxford corner code or a pack quantity from another model. Request the current sheet and an agreed detail before ordering it for an external corner.

These entries identify the components to discuss with Ristone. Confirm the current model, shade and supply configuration in the quotation rather than substituting a similarly sized corner from elsewhere in the range.

Measure corner height separately

Mark each external corner on an elevation or sketch. Record the height that will actually receive cladding, in metres, and add those heights to obtain the total external corner length. Identify interrupted sections separately so the quotation can account for their setting out. Keep this schedule separate from the wall area in square metres.

Total corner height ÷ listed linear metres per box gives an indicative number of boxes; these historical catalogue values, like m² per box, must be confirmed in the quotation.

Next, identify the corner-piece height in the sheet: Amsterdam is 7.5 cm, Bristol 4.5 cm, Belgrad and York 6.5 cm, and both Ribe components are 6 cm high. Those heights help relate the corner to the chosen courses. They do not establish a universal number of pieces per metre.

The product data does not state pieces per metre. The conversion from measured height to pieces, including the agreed joint layout and rounding to packs, must therefore be confirmed in the quotation. For Ribe, make clear that the count concerns a bicomponent corner arrangement, so a count of individual components cannot be mistaken for a count of complete corner positions.

Corner returns also occupy part of each adjacent face. Ask for the flat-field quantity to be reconciled with the corner allocation, rather than ordering the full face area as flats and adding corners without adjustment. Use the brick slip quantity guide for the separate area and box calculation. For measuring several piers or a wall base, see planning pillars and plinths.

If there is no dedicated corner

Agree the corner detail according to the chosen model’s installation instructions, confirmed before ordering. Include the junction in the project sketch and ask how it is to be finished with that particular model. Do not assume a cutting or mitring method is suitable simply because a flat slip has the desired appearance.

If the corner detail is essential to your choice, resolve it before approving the model. A sample of the flat face alone does not settle what the completed junction will look like.

Agree the setting-out before installation

The installation order and course layout follow the chosen model’s installation instructions, confirmed with Ristone before work starts. Request these instructions with the quotation. The product dimensions above are not a complete fixing specification.

Check the intended shade for flats and corners together. Colour is pigmented through the concrete mix. The actual shade may differ from photographs, and small differences between batches are possible. Include both component types in the same project enquiry and ask for batch coordination before ordering.

Send the model, colour, corner code, measured external corner heights, adjacent face areas and a sketch to request a project quotation. Ask the quotation to confirm complete corner quantities, component counts where relevant, packs and the corresponding flat-field allowance.

Before you order.

Are brick slip corner pieces always made in one piece?

No. Amsterdam C54M, Bristol C25M, Belgrad C60M and York C61M are monocomponent, one L-shaped piece. Ribe C05B is bicomponent, two pieces assembled at the corner.

How many brick slip corners do I need per metre?

Measure external corner height in metres and identify the corner-piece height in the model sheet. The sheet does not give a pieces-per-metre figure; the quantity, joint layout and pack rounding must be confirmed in the quotation.

What if my brick slip model has no corner piece?

Agree the corner detail according to that model's installation instructions before ordering. Berlin, Berna, Corby and Oliva have no corner piece listed. Oxford also has no corner listed, and its packaging must be confirmed with Ristone using the current sheet.

Do I fit corner pieces or flat brick slips first?

The installation order and course layout follow the chosen model's installation instructions, confirmed with Ristone before work starts. Request these instructions with the quotation.
