How to calculate coping quantities for each wall run, including joints and cuts
A total wall length will give you a rough coping quantity, but it will not show how many cuts and ends the order needs. Measure each run between the finished faces of the pillars, then allow for the joints and the gaps where the coping meets each pillar. Ristone coping pieces are 500 mm long; the layout determines how those pieces fit.
Confirm the width before counting lengths
Measure the wall at the top, including render or cladding. If the finish has not been fitted, add its thickness and the adhesive layer on each face. Ristone gives a guide overhang of 30–50 mm per side, depending on the profile and installation, with the final choice confirmed in the quotation.
For equal overhangs: coping width = finished wall thickness + 2 × overhang.
A 300 mm finished wall with 50 mm on each side needs a 400 mm coping. Check the selected profile and water-shedding detail as well as the dimensions. The published catalogue lists three-way coping in widths from 250 to 500 mm, in 50 mm steps, and straight coping in widths from 200 to 450 mm, in 50 mm steps. Current sizes and colours are confirmed with the quotation.
The US Brick Industry Association recommends overhangs on both sides, a sloping top and an underside drip in its masonry detailing guidance. These are general principles, not UK regulations or confirmation of the detail on every Ristone model (BIA, Technical Notes 36A, revised 1981, reissued 2001). See the pier cap and coping sizing guide for finished measurements.
Measure each run separately
Record the clear length at coping level between the finished pillar faces. Label the runs on a sketch, including changes of direction and any different end details. If you calculate clear lengths by subtracting pillar widths, use the finished pillar widths.
The first estimate is pieces per run ≈ run length ÷ 500 mm, rounded up. This ignores joints, end gaps and reusable offcuts, so it is not the final order quantity.
Fit the pieces, joints and ends into the run
The complete length is:
run length = sum of installed piece lengths + joints between pieces + both end gaps
With n pieces, there are n − 1 joints. Agree the joint width and end gaps before deciding the cuts. Do not narrow the agreed joints to force whole pieces into the space.
| Clear run | First estimate | What needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500 mm | 3 pieces | Three whole pieces leave no room for joints or end gaps. Reduce their combined length by the total joint and end-gap allowance. |
| 2,700 mm | 6 pieces | With five whole pieces, the final cut length is 200 mm minus five joints and both end gaps. Check that the result is suitable for the model. |
If the last piece would be too short, redistribute the cuts, for example across two pieces. Ask Ristone and the installer to confirm the minimum suitable cut length, the treatment of cut edges and the orientation of the profile.
Installed pieces and purchased pieces can differ
Offcuts may serve another run, but only where the length and finished edges suit the position. This is why the quotation needs a run-by-run sketch.
For illustration only, ignore joints and cutting loss on four runs of 2,700 mm. Each run takes five whole pieces and one 200 mm piece. Rounding each run up gives 24 purchased pieces. Geometrically, two 500 mm pieces can provide the four 200 mm ends, so the count becomes 20 + 2 = 22. Actual joints, cutting loss, profile orientation and acceptable edges must be checked before using that count.
Agree any spare quantity for site damage with the quotation. There is no fixed waste percentage that fits every layout.
Send the measurements with your enquiry
Include the finished wall thickness, each clear run length, coping profile and colour, finished pillar dimensions if caps are also required, and the delivery country, postcode and required date.
Ristone supplies from Romania to the UK and the rest of Europe on a quotation basis, depending on product, quantity and destination. For the UK, transport, customs duties and import VAT are paid by the buyer.
Ask for the transport quotation and confirm customs and import charges separately before ordering. All quantities and cuts remain indicative until Ristone confirms the project. See concrete wall coping or request a project quote.
